Transform Your Workplace with Mindfulness‑Based Strengths Practice
Science‑backed wellbeing for high‑performing teams
Today’s workplaces are under relentless pressure. Long hours, high stakes and constant change make stress, burnout and disengagement endemic. Generic “wellness” initiatives rarely move the needle. Mindfulness‑Based Strengths Practice (MBSP) offers a next‑generation solution: a rigorous, research‑led programme that integrates mindfulness with character‑strengths development to foster resilience, engagement and performance.

Why Workplace Wellbeing Needs to Evolve
Most wellbeing programmes focus on managing symptoms – alleviating stress or anxiety – rather than cultivating the positive drivers of performance. Yet the costs of poor mental health continue to rise: Deloitte’s 2022 study found that every £1 spent on workplace mental‑health initiatives yields an estimated £5.30 in reduced absence and increased productivity, while the cost of poor mental health to UK employers reached £56 bn. NICE guidelines now recommend that employers offer mindfulness and meditation to all staff, with targeted support for those at risk.
What’s missing? Traditional mindfulness programmes (like Mindfulness‑Based Stress Reduction) emphasise non‑striving and detachment. In some workplace contexts this can dampen motivation and performance. MBSP fills this gap by combining mindfulness with character‑strengths training, explicitly developing qualities such as curiosity, perseverance, hope and wisdom that predict work satisfaction.

What Is Mindfulness‑Based Strengths Practice (MBSP)?
MBSP was developed by psychologist Dr Ryan Niemiec and is the first programme to integrate mindfulness with positive‑psychology’s character strengths. Participants learn to:
-
Cultivate present‑moment awareness and self‑regulation through mindfulness.
-
Identify their unique signature strengths and apply them intentionally.
-
Build “strong mindfulness” – mindfulness underpinned by character strengths – and “mindful strengths use” – character strengths applied with mindful awareness.
-
Translate these insights into daily work, relationships and personal life.
This dual focus fosters deeper engagement, stronger motivation and a greater sense of meaning. Randomised trials comparing MBSP with MBSR show that MBSP is more effective in several outcomes, particularly for individuals experiencing reduced wellbeing or burnout.

Why MBSP Works in Organisations
Mindfulness alone can reduce stress.
MBSP goes further — it develops the psychological resources that sustain engagement, motivation and performance at work.

Deepens Engagement
By integrating character strengths with mindfulness, employees become more present, more invested, and more aligned with their work.
Research indicates that combining awareness with strengths use supports deeper and more sustainable engagement — not just short-term stress relief.

Builds Resilience
Participants learn to meet pressure, setbacks and interpersonal challenges with greater composure and clarity.
MBSP strengthens inner resources — helping individuals regulate stress while actively applying their strengths in difficult situations.

Cultivates Motivation
Traditional mindfulness programmes emphasise non-striving. In some organisational contexts, this can inadvertently dampen drive.
MBSP addresses this by intentionally cultivating character strengths such as perseverance, curiosity and hope — supporting intrinsic motivation alongside wellbeing.

Enhances Performance
A growing body of research shows that mindfulness-based interventions improve job satisfaction, wellbeing, and work-related outcomes.
By integrating strengths development, MBSP supports both human flourishing and meaningful contribution — strengthening performance without sacrificing psychological health.
Scientific Credibility & Collaboration
MBSP is not a wellbeing trend. It is grounded in rigorous research at the intersection of mindfulness science and positive psychology. At The Wellbeing Campus, our workplace programmes are delivered in collaboration with leading researchers to ensure scientific integrity, practical relevance, and measurable impact.

Co-developed with Liverpool John Moores University
Our MBSP programmes are designed and delivered in collaboration with researchers at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU).
This partnership ensures:
-
Programmes are aligned with current research in contemplative science and positive psychology
-
Delivery reflects real-world organisational demands
-
Evaluation options are available for organisations seeking measurable outcomes
Rooted in the Scientific Heritage of MBSP
Mindfulness-Based Strengths Practice (MBSP) was developed by Dr Ryan Niemiec and integrates two substantial evidence bases:
-
Mindfulness science
-
Character strengths research
The integration of these domains has been shown to support engagement, wellbeing, strengths use, and personal transformation.
Our programmes honour this scientific foundation while adapting delivery to the realities of contemporary workplaces.
